Acorns Overview
As the Fin-Tech world continues to heat up, many players have entered the market for digital investing. This is going to be a
look into the popular app, Acorns, to see if it is everything to claim to be on the surface. Acorns stood out among the rest for
a few reasons: ease of use, low maintenance costs, low minimum deposit, their round up feature, and the Found Money options.
Other options out there are Wealthfront, Betterment, Robinhood, in addition to Acorns. Robinhood is nice, but for someone with
a more knowledge about trading. Wealthfront was not as user friendly, and required a minimum deposit. The others just weren’t
competitive, however, Acorns is perfect for the beginning investor.
Acorns New Account Setup
The first thing to note was that setup was relatively quick and easy. One of the things Acorns is lauded for is their ease of use.
Acorns was one of the more simple financial accounts to setup.
First, visit their website, hit on an Open Account button, and sign up. This will
allow you to review the features without making an initial deposit. (Most people will use the app as that was the primary audience
for Acorns, but they do offer a nice website that allows you to do everything the app does. This is a major plus as not all app
based tools allow you to do so.) The interface for the app is user friendly, pleasing to the eyes, and displays the main things
you want to see when you log into your account such as total invested, total gains/losses, dividends, Found Money, referrals, and
withdrawn money.
Acorns Investing Fees and Cost
Other apps out there had minimum deposits, unclear fee structures, or simply high rates. But it is not all as it seems on the
surface once you start to look at Acorns more closely. Acorns starts with a low monthly cost: $1.00 per month
basic plan; and $3.00 per month with reimbursed ATM fees. Although the maintenance fee upfront looks low, it can be burdensome if
you have a low balance. It accounts for $12.00/year total which can be a significant detriment to savings if you are only using
their app for the round up feature.
